Where Does Tamanu Oil Come From?

Tamanu oil comes from the tamanu tree, which is a tropical tree found in Asia and Australia. The oil itself comes from the tamanu fruit seeds on the tree.

The nuts are first cracked, then the seeds are removed and dried in the sun for 1-2 months, which allows for the oil to develop on the seeds. After the oil is accumulated, the seeds are de-shelled and pressed to extract it.

Since tamanu oil comes from trees and is ethically extracted, it is vegan and considered a very clean ingredient.

Benefits of Tamanu Oil on the Skin

Tamanu oil provides a ton of great benefits for the skin. Since it is so rich in fatty acids, which provide structure for your skin by helping it retain water and function properly, tamanu oil is very beneficial for moisture.

A second powerful benefit of tamanu oil is anti-aging, thanks to the high content of antioxidants naturally found in it. Antioxidants are super important in fighting free radicals, which float freely around the body and can cause damage. Free radicals occur with exposure to environmental damage like sun and pollution.

Antioxidants are typically found as additives in anti-aging products and in sunscreens. That being said, not only does tamanu oil add added moisture to strengthen the skin’s barrier to counteract aging but it also fights against the environmental damage caused by aging’s enemies – like the sun!

A third benefit of tamanu oil is its germ-fighting capabilities. Tamanu oil is both antibacterial and antifungal, working againstp. acnes andp.granulosum - the bacteria associated with acne. The antibacterial and antifungal properties also make tamanu oil great at fighting inflammation.

Tamanu Oil’s anti-inflammatory benefit can be attributed to the compound molecule found in it called calophyllolide. Calophylloide heals wounds and can be very helpful in fighting skin conditions that cause inflammation like psoriasis and eczema.

Lastly, tamanu oil stimulates collagen growth, making it great for targeting wrinkles, reducing scars, and general skin cell regeneration.

Risks of Using Tamanu Oil

Tamanu Oil is a very skin safe oil, with a comeodogenic rating of 2 (it won’t cause acne and is safe for combination skin!) However, there are risks associated with using tamanu oil if you have an allergy to nuts.

Since tamanu oil is sourced from tree nuts, nobody with a tree nut allergy should use it. Additionally, tamanu oil is toxic if internally ingested.

As for other precautions, like any other product, a patch test should be performed if you commonly experience sensitivity.
